The Early Years…

As Robin looks back over the years, she can’t help but to be grateful for what all life has brought her.  The good and the bad.  Born and raised in Wichita, KS,  Robin was brought up in the church.  With her mother being a gospel piano player, Robin grew up with the gospel sounds of Shirley Caesar, Mighty Clouds of Joy, gospels mass choirs, and many more!  Music was always played in the home and Robin was surrounded by a musical  family.   Robin recalls hearing her mother, grandmother, grandfather, aunts, and uncles singing the praises!

“I eventually heard the scatting vocals of Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Betty Carter and was hooked!  THEN,  one day I heard Liza Minnelli sing “New York New York” on television!  That’s when the ‘theatre bug’ bit!”

Schoolmates would loan her cassette tapes (remember those?) of Tina Turner, Prince, Patti Labelle, Anita Baker and others;  Robin found herself mingling Broadway sounds, jazz, and gospel to create her own unique sound.

Believe it or not Robin grew up as a shy little girl and to do this day is surprised how theatre became such a big part of her life.  Getting her start at Wichita Children’s Theatre of Wichita, KS;  Robin was cast as an ensemble member and has never looked back!

“I will always be humble because I know I could have less.  I will remain forever grateful because I know I’ve had less”                                                                                                                                                                                                               ~…unknown
